Federico Marchetti

Federico Marchetti is an entrepreneur at the intersection of luxury and technology.

In 1999, he founded YOOX, seizing the opportunity long before industry insiders understood what the Internet could offer the world of fashion. Since then, Federico has continued to stay two steps ahead of the market and customer trends – whether it’s developing artificial intelligence or promoting sustainable fashion.

In 2015, Federico drove the game-changing merger of YOOX and NET-A-PORTER to create YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP, the world leader in online luxury and fashion.

Uniquely positioned in the high-growth online luxury sector, YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP has a client base of more than 3.5 million high-spending customers from over 180 countries, employs over 5,000 people and generated revenues of almost $2.5 billion in 2017, half of which were from mobile sales.

In 2018, with a valuation of $6 billion, YOOX NET-A-PORTER became part of Richemont, one of the world’s leading luxury groups, whose portfolio of Maisons includes Cartier, IWC Schaffhausen, Chloé, Montblanc and Officine Panerai.

Today, Federico Marchetti is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP, and divides his time between Milan, London and the rest of the world.

Federico holds a degree in Economics from Bocconi University in Milan and an MBA from Columbia Business School in New York City.

Milestones and Achievements

  • Federico was the first in the fashion industry to recognise the importance of sustainability. In 2009, YOOX launched YOOXYGEN, the first online destination dedicated to sustainable fashion, and introduced the ECOBOX®, the first responsible packaging in e-commerce composed of 100% recyclable materials. In 2017, YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP adopted a fur-free policy. In 2019, NET-A-PORTER launched NET SUSTAIN, a platform to highlight sustainable brands that meet key attributes for responsible sourcing and production. The Group’s Italian facilities use 100% renewable energy and globally the share is increasing rapidly. Sustainability continues to be a priority for the Group.
  • Federico is personally committed to fostering gender equality in the workplace. Currently, in YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP, two-thirds of employees are women, including half of the senior leaders, holding some of the most strategic roles in the Group. Federico is a founding member of the Male Champions of Change’s Global Technology Group, aimed at taking practical actions to increase the representation of women in leadership and advance gender equality in the tech industry.

  • A large part of Federico’s focus has been on mobile commerce, which he began to explore in 2006 when he launched a mobile taskforce at YOOX to investigate the emerging opportunity. NET-A-PORTER and YOOX were amongst the first retail brands to launch shopping apps for iOS in 2009 and ten years later well above 50% of Group sales are made via mobile devices, and remains the most significant growth channel.

Armani.com was one of the first Online Flagship Stores launched by the Group. In 2017, YOOX NET-A-PORTER announced a partnership with VALENTINO to create a new omni-channel business model – NEXT ERA – to offer customers a fully integrated shopping experience by connecting online shopping and the boutique.

In 2016, YOOX NET-A-PORTER GROUP pioneered online sales of hard luxury and became the leader in selling brands such as Piaget, Cartier, Pomellato, Tiffany & Co. and Buccellati. In 2018, the Group launched two of the world’s first online hard luxury destinations: The Fine Jewelry and Watch Suite on NET-A-PORTER and The Luxury Watch Guide on MR PORTER.
